Building a more circular and resilient European raw materials sector.

On the 29th of September, our founder Ludwin Daal attended the Expert Forum: Green & Circular Metals, organised by EIT RawMaterials.

The event brought together experts from industry, policy and research to discuss the transition towards a more circular, competitive and resilient metals value chain in Europe.

One of the key themes emerging from the discussions was the importance of resilience and a stronger European single market for secondary raw materials. The upcoming European Circular Economy Act was an important part of this conversation, with discussions around how a more harmonised approach can help remove barriers to circularity and strengthen the market for secondary materials.

A particularly relevant challenge is creating greater clarity and alignment around when waste ceases to be classified as waste and can become a product or secondary raw material. This is currently an area where differences in regional, national and European legislation occur. The Circular Economy Act is meant to break through this barrier across European markets.

The discussions highlighted that achieving a truly circular economy will require more than technological innovation alone. Clear regulation, cross-border alignment and collaboration between industry, policymakers and research – creating and maintaining those vital eco-systems – will be equally important.

Thank you to EIT RawMaterials and everyone involved for an insightful event and valuable discussions.
